Spray Insulation Vancouver Team

We have a team of young applicators who work with products which are LEED compliant and environmentally safe. When it comes to Spray Insulation. Vancouver, is the city where we are the experts. Sky -Side does care about protecting the environment which is our main focus.

Advantages of Spray Foam Insulation

  • It prevents airflow by sealing and expanding penetrations, gaps and leaks.
  • It can also act like a vapor barrier because it offers more permeability compared to plastic sheeting vapor barriers. This reduces the amount of moisture that builds up therefore you get less mold growth.
  • It makes it possible to fill gaps in completed walls without the need to tear down walls.
  • It is a suitable option when working in tight spaces.
  • It offers acoustical insulation.
  • It can expand during the curing process and this fills bypasses and provides good resistance to air infiltration. It works better than blankets and batts which can leave some air pockets and bypasses. It is better than loose-fill but it can be compared to wet-spray cellulose.
  • It enhances structural stability
  • It is an alternative option when loose-fill is not suitable like between rafters and joists. If it is applied between rafters, nails which protrude from the underside can be covered by the spray foam to protect your head.
  • This cementitious foam is fireproof.
  • Spray Insulation Vancouver - Advantages of Closed-Cell over Open-Cell Foams

    insulation installators vancouver

  • Open-cell foams are porous therefore water and vapor can easily pass through the insulation. Closed-cell foam is not porous therefore moisture cannot penetrate and this forms a vapor barrier.

Note: The building code recommends vapor barriers for all forms of insulation. You can contact the local authorities in your area to find out what the requirements are.

  • Closed-cell foams make better insulators. Open-cell foams usually have an R-value of 3 or 4 for each inch (RSI-0.53 to RSI-0.70 per inch), while closed-cell foams have R-values of between 5 and 8 per inch (RSI-0.88 to RSI-1.41 per inch). This is an essential aspect especially in cases with limited space because the insulation layer you use can be thinner. One inch of closed-cell foam can provide the kind of insulation you get with open-cell foam.

  • Closed-cell foams are quite strong and can provide some structural reinforcement for insulated surfaces. Open-cell foam is soft once it is cured and provides limited structural strength.
  • After installing open-cell foam, you need to trim it and dispose the waste material. Closed-cell foam does not usually need trimming whether it has waste or not unlike open-cell foam

Spray Foam Types

Icynene spray formula

Icynene (polyicynene) R-3.6 (RSI-0.63) per inch does not settle, sag or shrink and this makes it a good option. This type uses water for its application unlike other forms that use chemicals that affect the environment. Its flammability is low but it tends to be expensive. One of the main disadvantages is that it does not meet the code requirements in some jurisdictions because its smoke is poisonous.

Polyicynene
This type of open-cell polyurethane foam is plastic and produced from petrochemicals. During the application, contact with respiratory system, skin and eyes should be avoided. This is a hazard that is avoided even during the manufacturing process. They are the largest cause of work-related pulmonary disorders and asthma in industrial countries.

Sealection 500 spray foam
This type has R-3.8 (RSI-0.67) per inch and is referred to as water blown because water is used during the manufacturing process to form carbon dioxide and steam which makes the foam expand. The flame spread is 21 while the smoke developed is 217 and this makes it a Class 1 material which is a good fire rating. The disadvantage is that it is an Isocyanate.

"SoyTherm 50" spray foam
It has R-4.1 (RSI- 0.72) per inch and produced using soy beans which are renewable and produce the highest true R-value per inch of any open-celled “half pound” spray foam insulation. It does not have any formaldehyde, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) or asbestos. During the production process, there are no carbon dioxide emissions. This type of insulation is the only one made of soy with class 1 fire rate. The disadvantage is that this type of spray foam has always been expensive but it is now becoming more affordable for homeowners who want to retrofit their homes.

Cementitious foam
An example of this is Air-Krete which has R-3.9 (RSI-0.69) per inch and is not hazardous. This is the only type that does not have restrictions when it comes to application. It is also fireproof and does not produce any smoke when it comes into contact with flames. It has a firewall of 3.5 inches application for each ASTM E-814 testing. It is a good option if you want to insulate your home against noise and it does not produce any echo. It is also safe for the environment and is not expansive therefore it can be used in an existing home which still has its interior sheathing. This foam is also very sustainable and is made up of air and magnesium oxide cement. The air is formed from magnesium oxide which is collected from seawater. The foam is blown using air therefore harmful agents like HCFCs and CFCs are not used. It is also non-poisonous even during the application process. This foam will not settle or shrink once it is used and does not emit any VOC. The form is chemically inert and there are no side effects after exposure. It is not damaged by insects; mold cannot grow on it and in insoluble when in contact with water. The disadvantage is that it is fragile if a low density is used to get the R value required. This foam is also expensive just like the other types of foams used for insulation.

Polyisocyanurate
This type has a R-5.6 (RSI-0.99) but it can also be higher after it is stabilized. The stabilized ones have (R-7, i.e., RSI-1.23, or more). It is less flammable compared to polyurethane.

Phenolic
This form uses air as a blowing agent and shrinks during the curing process.

Closed-cell polyurethane
This foam is either yellow or white and purple in the UK. A variety blowing agents can be used for this foam. It is does not react when exposed to water vapor and water and offers air tightness. One of the types that are manufactured is WALL TITE from BASF Polyurethane U.K Ltd. This type of spray foam insulation is used for new and refurbished buildings.

Open-cell (low density) polyurethane
This foam is usually white or yellow and expands to seal and fill cavities slowly to prevent wall damage. It is resistant to water wicking put can water vapor can penetrate. This foam is also resistant to fire.

Polystyrene
An example of this foam is Great Stuff which is produced by Dow Chemical and is available in a can. It is made up of various complex chemicals including ether, polyol and isocynates. The manufacturer designed this product for small applications but you can also buy several cans for a large project like sealing sill plates. The blowing agent can catch fire easily therefore it is important to think about ventilation during the application process especially if you are using large quantities. Poisonous vapors are limited because the vapor has low pressure and the ventilation is supposed to get rid of the amount that accumulates during the application. In some situations, it is advisable to use a respirator which has an organic vapor sorbent. This is necessary in situations where the foam requires heating. When using very thick applications, it is better to use them one by one so that each one gets adequate curing time.

Honeywell's Enovate Foam Blowing Agent
This is a type of HFC which is applied in closed-cell spray foam insulations. Its ozone depletion potential is zero but its global warming is quite high at 950. This means that it can cause more global warming compared to carbon dioxide. Some types of this foam provide closed and open-cell kinds of spray foam insulation and there are those which use blowing agents which have high global warming potential. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)
